The Broadmoor embraces its surroundings with a collection of new camps.

The climb to the top of Cheyenne Mountain is a dizzying trek, zigzagging higher and higher up a steep dirt path above the city of Colorado Springs. At the base of the mountain, the historic Broadmoor—a magnificent 779-room resort founded by the entrepreneur Spencer Penrose in 1918—is visible by its red-roofed buildings and famed green golf courses. It is here, however, 3,000 feet above the main resort, where the Broadmoor has introduced its latest take on Rocky Mountain luxury.

Opened last August near the summit of Cheyenne Mountain, the Broadmoor’s Cloud Camp presents a decidedly rugged alternative to the highly polished experience at the resort. The camp—which is part of a trio of new all-inclusive properties that the Broadmoor calls its Wilderness Experience—occupies the site of Penrose’s original 1920s Cheyenne Mountain lodge. A six-room main lodge and 12 log cabins adorned with Native American artworks and antiques serve as a base for guests to explore the surrounding Pike National Forest on dozens of hiking and mountain-biking trails. (Adventurous visitors can even choose to make the initial ascent to the mountaintop camp on foot with a 3-hour hike from Cheyenne Mountain’s base.) Cloud Camp also offers more extreme pursuits, including mountain climbing, as well as yoga and other wellness-minded activities.

Equestrian excursions are the focus at the Ranch at Emerald Valley, which the Broadmoor opened in 2013 about eight miles west of the main resort. Also set on the site of an original Penrose lodge, the property includes 10 historic log cabins that have been rebuilt and redecorated with oversize leather armchairs, woodburning fireplaces, and private decks. An authentic cattle ranch, the camp offers trail rides, as well as cattle drives at the nearby Elk Ranch.

Making its debut this June, the third Wilderness Experience location will be on the nearby Tarryall River. The Broadmoor Fishing Camp will feature seven restored 19th-century cabins and more than eight miles of private river. The camp adds to the angling experiences at Broadmoor’s new fishing school, which launched at the main resort last summer.

While guests are encouraged to enjoy the Colorado Springs wilderness at the three new camps, each offers comforts commensurate with the Broadmoor’s long-standing tradition of luxury. Following days on horseback, guests at the Ranch at Emerald Valley can retire to two outdoor hot tubs or cozy up around the fire pit. Evenings at Cloud Camp can be spent at the main lodge sipping spiced rum punch and dining on beef Wellington by the stone fireplace. Still, should the allure of the Broadmoor’s modern facilities prove too great a temptation, the resort and its tennis club, three golf courses, three swimming pools, spa, and multiple dining venues are but a short drive away.
