In 1916, King Alfonso XIII of Spain commissioned an opulent palace hotel that would serve as a royal hideaway in the center of historic Seville. More than a decade of construction followed before the property—adorned with painted tiles, marble floors, and Moorish-style coffered ceilings—made its debut in 1929 with an elaborate celebration attended by the king and his wife, Queen Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg. Today, stepping into the Hotel Alfonso XIII is as enchanting as ever, thanks to a $25 million renovation by Starwood’s Luxury Collection that was completed in 2012. Guests enter through a meticulously restored marble lobby lined with ornate wrought-iron windows and colorful tile mosaics. Contemporary artworks and muted colors lend a modern touch to the 151 guest rooms, many of which are outfitted with original crystal chandeliers and leather headboards bearing the hotel’s noble seal. After a day of exploring Seville’s palaces and museums, guests can unwind with tapas and sangria in the royal-blue American Bar. ($350–$4,500) luxurycollection.com
