Set along the cherry-tree-lined banks of the Kamo River, the Ritz-Carlton, Kyoto, channels the subdued ambience of the former imperial capital’s ryokan, or inns. A commitment to tradition is apparent at every turn, from the lattice-framed lobby lounge decorated with washi-paper artwork to the garden-filled courtyard with its three-story stone waterfall. Japanese minimalism reigns in the 134 guest rooms, each of which is adorned with the customary light-wood-paneled walls, calligraphy hangings, and bonsai trees. Following a bicycle tour of Kyoto’s many temples and shrines, guests can retire to the tranquil spa, where Espa therapies incorporate matcha green tea from nearby Uji. For more local flavor, sample traditional kaiseki cuisine in the Mizuki restaurant’s four private dining rooms lined with shoji sliding doors and kimono-inspired wall motifs.
