Travel: Part of the Hole

For those who crave wide-open space, Jackson Hole has it all—expansive vistas framed by the majestic Grand Tetons; rugged backcountry ideal for hiking, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing; lush summer meadows and wildflowers; deep, soft winter snow; and some of the world’s best and most challenging downhill terrain. But the resort area’s seemingly endless expanse of outdoor opportunity has a flip side: Only 3 percent of the land in Jackson Hole is available for private ownership.

 

“The air is pretty rarefied here,” muses Paul Cherrett, general manager of the Four Seasons Resort Jackson Hole, a grand undertaking that promises to raise the level of accommodation in the otherwise rustic region. Opening to guests in January, the resort will also expand the area’s limited ownership options through a collection of 40 shared-ownership Residence Club condominiums. “This property brings a much-needed high-end component to the mountain,” claims Cherrett. “It introduces a new home-owning opportunity for the kind of person who has the means and ability to enjoy the outdoor resort experience without compromise.”

Each shared-ownership title offers deed to one-seventh of a unit and five weeks of visitation privileges per year (two weeks in summer, two in winter, and one in spring or fall). The title provides all of the tax benefits of ownership, as well as the ability to sell your stake whenever, and for whatever price, you choose. Two-bedroom units (1,720 square feet) are priced at $370,000; three-bedroom units (2,240 square feet) go for $520,000. And if five weeks in Jackson Hole is insufficient, you can tack on additional time for $100 a day.

The resort—a ski-in, ski-out design at the base of the slopes—exudes the romance and grace of a grand old lodge: exposed timber beams, rough-hewn stones, wood siding, and stone chimneys. The condos have a distinctly Western flair, appointed with fine woods, stone fireplaces, granite countertops, and deep soaking tubs. Each unit comes fully stocked with everything from cutlery and cookware to televisions, DVDs, and high-speed Internet access.

Residence Club owners can take advantage of the Four Seasons’ ample amenities, which include a personal ski concierge to keep your boots warm and skis waxed. The resort staff will pack and store your belongings—skis, golf clubs, even family photos—at the end of each visit and place them exactly where you left them when you next return.

Jackson Hole owners can also exchange time at the Four Seasons’ other Residence Clubs in Carlsbad, Calif., and Scottsdale, Ariz. According to Cherrett, an additional club will soon open in Costa Rica. “The Four Seasons aims to offer a collection of world-class resorts in world-class locations,” he notes. “But here in Jackson, with a mountain of this caliber at our doorstep, it’s all about the outdoors.”
