The Ultimate Poker Match

  • Guy Liberte and Jonathan Duhamel

The largest buy-in poker tournament, with a $1 million entry fee, will take place July 1 to 3 at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The tournament, Big One for One Drop, will be part of the annual World Series of Poker but will host only 48 professional and nonprofessional poker players competing to win more than $12,250,000, the largest prize ever awarded in a poker match. The event is sponsored by Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberté, who will also be playing for the prize. From each entry, $888,889 will go into the prize pool and $111,111 will be donated to Laliberté’s charity One Drop, which helps countries in need of clean water.

Prior to the main event, optional qualifying tournaments will be held at various venues across the country, including Palm Beach Kennel Club in West Palm Beach, Fla.; Harrah’s Philadelphia Casino & Racetrack in Chester, Pa.; and Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. The winner from each tournament will be awarded $25,300 and a spot in the culminating satellite tournament in Las Vegas on June 30; the winner on June 30 will be guaranteed entry to the main, million-dollar tournament, which will be televised on ESPN.
