21 Ultimate Gifts: Frequent Flier

<< Back to Robb Report, The 20th Annual Ultimate Gift Guide

It is difficult to be the coolest kid on the block at Spruce Creek, the first fly-in community in the United States. For the past 33 years, Spruce Creek, located in Daytona Beach, Fla., has attracted ardent aviators possessing formidable collections of toys, winged and otherwise. However, it is still possible to make the neighbors sit up and take notice. Spruce Creek Fly-In Realty is offering a gift package that would leave the Wright brothers agog.

The gift begins with a 15,000-square-foot home on a plot larger than four acres. Amenities include a private tennis court, a heated pool with a large hot tub, an outdoor kitchen, a master wing with a library and a billiards/media room, a guest wing with two bedrooms, a three-car garage, and—because this is, after all, a fly-in community—a double hangar. One is 50 feet by 60 feet, the other is 65 feet by 65 feet, and the pair are linked by a two-story pilot’s lounge that features a sauna and an elevator.

These hangars will always be full, because the home comes with six aircraft, each addressing a different aviation need or whim. The highlight of the fleet is a speedy new Cessna Citation X, which seats eight passengers and two crew members and, with its range of 3,567 miles, can reach most destinations within North America. Also included is a Sikorsky S-76 helicopter, the favorite of diplomats and Fortune 100 companies. It seats 19 passengers plus two crew members, flies at a top speed of 178 mph, and has a range of more than 450 miles.

Vintage aircraft enthusiasts will flip for the P-51 Mustang, a prominent fighter plane that served the Allies well in World War II. The WaCO UPF-7 classic open-cockpit biplane satisfies the urge to perform loops and rolls in midair. The Pilatus PC-12 single-engine turboprop serves as the SUV of the skies: It seats eight, has a range of 2,100 miles, and offers ample room for cargo. Completing the sextet is a Grumman HU-16B Albatross seaplane, which represents an ideal means of beating weekend traffic on the way from Spruce Creek to the beach house.
