More power, less weight, and improved aerodynamics make the new $176,000 Porsche 911 GT3 RS (porsche.com) a more race-ready version of the already formidable 911 GT3. The 4-liter flat-6 that powers the RS is the highest-displacement engine of any street-legal 911 variant. It produces 500 hp, which is 25 hp more than the engine of the GT3. The body of the RS is visually distinguished by wider fender flares and features a magnesium roof, along with front fenders and luggage- and engine-compartment lids all in carbon fiber. Together, the body panels weigh 22 pounds less than those of the GT3. The aerodynamic enhancements include larger front-fender air intakes, which evoke Porsche’s historic 935 racer. The PDK transmission shifts automatically or, for serious track work, with paddles. The manual transmission of the previous-generation GT3 RS is a memory that will seem as distant as the cars in the rearview mirror.
