For those who consider the 572 hp Lamborghini Murciélago too tame for the track, the good folks in Sant’Agata Bolognese have the answer: the Murciélago R-GT. Lamborghini has not released its specifications or performance numbers, but the R-GT, powered by a 6.0-liter V-12 engine, will be eligible to compete in FIA GT and American Le Mans Series racing, which means the machine will be plenty fast. The R-GT will weigh less than 2,420 pounds to comply with class requirements, making it 1,500 pounds lighter than a stock Murciélago.

Lamborghini will build the car in conjunction with Audi Sport, the parent company’s motorsports division, and Reiter Engineering, a German race engineering firm. The R-GT will mark Lamborghini’s first venture into competitive racing since its brief dalliance in Formula One in the late 1980s and early 1990s. When it goes on sale next year, the R-GT is expected to carry a price tag of more than $500,000. Says Lamborghini Chairman and President Werner Mischke, “We anticipate this new racecar becoming one of the special attractions in GT motorsports.”
