Just as it did with the Ferrari that participated in our Car of the Year competition, mechanical misfortune plagued this Dino 206 SP—the fourth of 18 that Ferrari built—during its highest-profile contests. The car’s career apex came in the spring of 1966, when it was driven to a third-place finish in the ADAC 1,000 km Nürburgring. But a month later, the Dino broke down on the ninth lap at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In 1967, it failed to finish the 24 Hours of Daytona and then suffered another malfunction at the 12 Hours of Sebring. In 1968, it again posted a DNF at Daytona, its last major event. Like other Ferraris, this Dino might be temperamental, but its beauty compels an owner to suffer its moods. Proof of the car’s enduring appeal came last spring, when it sold at auction for more than 2.4 million euros, which, at the time, equaled nearly $3.3 million.
