The Best of the Best 2003: Sedans – Mercedes E55

<< Back to Robb Report, Best of the Best

We thought that it would be impossible to experience a better blend of elegance and performance than the one served up by the Mercedes-Benz E500—until AMG dangled the keys of the latest Mercedes E55 before us. Mercedes’ in-house tuner added leather sports seats, a high-performance 5-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel–mounted shift buttons, and four-stage Airmatic suspension. Such amenities complement the leading-edge luxury and safety equipment of the flawless and newly resculpted Mercedes E-Class.

The highlight of the E55 is its 5.5-liter intercooled, supercharged

V-8, which pumps out 469 hp and 516 ft lbs of pavement-curling torque. The $75,000 E55 bolts from stoplight to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, which makes it the fastest production Mercedes ever—you heard it correctly, SL55 owners. Yet the E55 is much more than a muscle-bound hot rod. It is just as impressive when driving your children to the cinema or shuttling clients to dinner as it is when it slashes through your favorite curvy roads.
