The Best of the Best 2003: Sedans – Mercedes-Benz Maybach 62

<< Back to Robb Report, Best of the Best

When is a car not a car? When it is a Mercedes-Benz Maybach 62. The sumptuous interior of the 6.2-meter-long machine resembles a megayacht’s salon, while the reclining rear seats match the first-class offerings of British Airways.

A twin-turbocharged, 543-hp V-12 powers the Maybach, giving it 664 ft lbs of torque at 2,300 rpm. For all its brawn, the $350,000 Maybach features a similarly superb level of elegance. Controls regulate the transparency of the windows, enabling passengers to select the proper lighting effects for activities ranging from watching DVDs to surfing the Internet, while a 21-speaker Bose system transforms the cabin into an intimate concert hall.

Aluminum folding tables lined with wood and leather are perfect perches for a plate of cheese and a glass of Champagne. And thanks to the Maybach’s Active Body Control system, which prevents the car from pitching during turns, you do not have to worry about spilling your beverage. Appropriately, a drive in the Maybach is like riding on air.
