For all of the braggadocio exhibited by its muscle-bound, boxlike exterior, the Hummer H2’s interior is surprisingly modest: no hand-stitched leather, no wooden steering wheel, no audiophile sound system. Then again, who needs such niceties when you are romping over rocks and through pond-size puddles? At its best, the $49,190 H2 grants its driver an escape from the mundane and a flashback to a time of frivolity.
The multitudes who employ the vehicle for blacktop commuting are missing the point of the H2. In substandard elements, the soccer-practice shuttle instantly transforms into a bring-it-on behemoth. The 6.0-liter, 316-hp V-8, which generates 360 ft lbs of torque at 4,000 rpm, effortlessly powers the 6,400-pounder over loose gravel and knobby roots—which is as close as anyone who drives the 10-mpg guzzler will ever come to being considered a tree-hugger.
