While most Italian small-yacht builders have ignored America’s love affair with the retro styling of Down East lobster boats, Mochi Craft, a division of Ferretti Group, has produced an extraordinary compromise. The Mochi Craft 44 Dolphin embodies the best elements of Mediterranean express cruisers and the plucky openness and easy water access of lobster boats.
Perfectly proportioned and completely lacking in pretensions, the $1.4 million boat, dolled up in teak and bright yellow, orange, or blue livery, is all anyone needs for a fun weekend on the water, whether it involves scooting to Nantucket at 33 mph or cruising inland lakes. The deckhouse includes the helm and a covered living area. Two en suite cabins and a compact galley sit below, and a 7-foot rigid inflatable boat stores in a garage under the cockpit. The U.S. version of the yacht is modified for American power and includes such essentials as an icemaker, telephone system, and bow thruster.
