Nothing signals a builder’s intention to compete in the megayacht business like launching a 496-ton vessel. Since taking over the Bloemsma yard in 1997, Nico van Breeman has been expanding the Dutch yard’s capacity while building his way toward the 100-foot barrier by launching ever-larger Doggersbank-style trawlers designed by Vripack.
Still, the leap from 2003’s 96-foot Patriot to the 158-foot Flying Eagle was an ambitious one, making the yacht’s success even more of a triumph. Beautifully modern, Flying Eagle offers a stunning example of Vripack’s versatility in naval architecture and design. Struik & Hamerslag have executed flawlessly the stylish interior, designed by Reymond Langton. The three-deck floating spiral staircase is worthy of MoMA, transitioning as it does from marble and mahogany to leather surrounding walls. The master suite, with white lacquer and blond wood, is a magnificent foil for the owner’s impressive glass art collection.
