J Craft, the Gotland, Sweden–based shipyard that builds surprisingly non-Swedish designs, debuted the J Craft Torpedo R at the Monaco Yacht Show in September. The “R pack” designation refers to a host of new features added to the 40-foot J Craft Torpedo. They lend a customized appearance to this unique yet classic-looking boat. The boat sleeps four plus room for one crew member.
The R pack provides exclusive color choices for the hull, a rose-polished stainless-steel dashboard and cockpit table, steering wheel in stitched cognac leather, bespoke luggage, and optional generator and air-conditioning. The upgraded IPS 600 Volvo Penta engines also push the boat toward the 50-mph potential of its hull shape.
The Torpedo combines a fiberglass hull with a traditional mahogany topside and interior. The boat has an open cockpit with rear sun pad that runs back to the tumblehome transom. An aerial view of the boat is a classic figure-eight shape. But the Torpedo R is more than just a smart compilation of lines and curves.
The boat ran well in the swell outside the harbor in Monte Carlo and would make a fine tender for most of the megayachts at anchor. The joystick control of the IPS engines also made it a breeze to dock in tight quarters. The Torpedo R is priced at about $1,091,100. (+46.735.73.441, www.j-craftboats.com)
