Unique Machines: Sports Sub

<< Back to Robb Report, Unique Machines

Robert Leeds has designed what he calls the first “underwater sports car.” Subeo, his company in Essex, England, is now taking orders for the Aquarius, a submarine available in two commercial versions, one that dives to 50 meters (164 feet) and another that can reach a depth of 100 meters (328 feet). The prototype, the Gemini (pictured),is a two-seater, but the three-seat Aquarius model will be ready for production in a few months.

At $845,000, the Aquarius (the 50-meter model) is pricier than a sports car, and it does not move nearly as fast. Its nickel–sodium chloride batteries provide a maximum speed of 8 mph (and a range of 8 to 15 miles per charge), but such a speed should be sufficient: Drivers and passengers will not want to zip past the exotic underwater scenery.
