A Jeweled Menagerie at Masterpiece London

Jill Newman

Masterpiece London, the prominent annual art, antiques, and design fair held June 28 through July 4, will have its largest showing of jewelers to date, including vintage dealers Kentshire, Fred Leighton, S.J. Phillips Ltd., Siegelson, and Verdura, along with contemporary designers Theo Fennell and Hemmerle. To add to the sparkle, in celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, there will be a specially curated diamond presentation featuring one-of-a-kind innovative designs in an artistic display that allows visitors to study the light and fire of the stones. Special pieces will be on exhibit from Harry Winston, Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Georg Jensen, Solange Azagury-Partridge, Christian Dior, and Tiffany & Co.

Several companies have saved their best work for this show, which draws a high-profile international audience. The German jeweler Hemmerle will unveil an extensive collection of Egyptian-inspired designs, including earrings featuring portraits of pharaohs and composed of 19th-century mosaics, and Horus, the ancient falcon-headed god, created in a pair of earrings with cascading strands of tiny blue sapphire beads. After a visit to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, Stefan Hemmerle uncovered a trove of ideas for this colorful collection. “The amuletic power of Egyptian jewels with their fascinating symbols and stories and stylized simplicity captured our minds and inspired us,” he said.

Aside from jewelry, there are 170 exhibitions from around the world, including 12 leading galleries from the United States, such as Les Enluminures, Safani Gallery, A La Vieille Russie, and the Silver Fund. The show offers a series of lectures, and fine food is being catered by venerable names—Le Caprice, Harry’s Bar, Scott’s, and the Mount Street Deli. The show takes place at the South Grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea. Tickets are $30 per person. (www.masterpiecefair.com)
