Best of the Best 2012: Men's Watches: Formal Styling: Piaget Altiplano

James D. Malcolmson

In the last few years, the contemporary dress watch has evolved far beyond the classic shapes of the mid-20th century, incorporating modern diameters and slim profiles. Because of its distinguished history of producing ultrathin movements, Piaget remains a leader in the field, and at 43 mm wide and just 5.25 mm thick, the company’s latest Altiplano model ($21,500) has taken the modern aesthetic to new extremes. These minute dimensions are made possible by Piaget’s new, thinnest-ever 1208P automatic movement. Assembling such delicate parts is no easy task, and the considerable time required to complete this movement has slowed the release of Altiplano examples into the marketplace. Still, the watch’s sophisticated mechanics—which, in this case, facilitate its impeccable styling—make it worth the wait. (877.874.2438, www.piaget.com)
