Great Escapes: Punta Mita, Mexico

Mexican Revelations Among the many charms of the Riviera Nayarit, on the Pacific coast, are its tropical climate, its marine wildlife, and its outdoor pursuits, such as surfing, scuba diving, and deep-sea fishing. Investors are staking claims along this 200-mile stretch of shore north of Puerto Vallarta, especially at Punta Mita, a 1,500-acre master-planned resort and private residential community on its own peninsula. Visitors can also unpack their suitcases at other properties in or near the fishing village of Punta de Mita, or at the St. Regis or Four Seasons resorts, but those seeking the seclusion of a stand-alone villa for their Mexican sojourns will find no shortage of thoughtfully designed properties available for rent.

Casa Papelillos On a lot fronting Banderas Bay in Punta Mita’s Ranchos Estates enclave, this villa would easily accommodate a wedding party or a generously sized gathering of family or friends. A hand-laid stone path, lit at night, connects the main residence and a guesthouse for a total of 19,000 square feet of interior space. There is a separate house and office for the hacienda manager. The property’s resort-like amenities include three infinity pools, an observatory, a media room, a fitness room, and a full staff. The outdoor living space includes a palapa for lounging and dining and a pavilion that seats 20—a houseful.

Casa Kalika Considered cozy for Punta Mita, this 10,000-square-foot villa has a contemporary Balinese vibe. The local architect Guillermo Michel Renteria created the airy home, employing hardwoods from Bali, art from Mexico, and furniture from Philippe Starck. A gourmet kitchen has an adjacent herb garden and a facing water wall, and among the other indoor features are a media room, a gym, four master bedrooms, and a guest studio with a kitchen. Outside there is a palapa living/dining area, a saltwater infinity pool and cabana, a bar, and tropical landscaping. A staff of four handles upkeep. The neighborhood is set along the Pacifico golf course, with views of the Pacific and Banderas Bay.

Villa Ranchos 8 The great room of this beachfront villa affords a view of Banderas Bay and the Marietas Islands, where divers can explore underwater caves and coral reefs. A water feature streams from a hot tub in the palm-lined courtyard, through the ultramodern white great room (where it serves as a primary blue accent color), and out to the backyard patio, where it becomes a full-size swimming pool; an indoor footbridge allows residents to traverse the water from one living area to another. The home sleeps 10 and comes with a full staff, including a cook.
