Best of the Best 2013: Cigars: La Aroma de Cuba Mi Amor Reserva

  • Richard Carleton Hacker

Thoughtful hosts may wish to cap off an exceptional dinner with a selection of digestifs accompanied by a lush and rich cigar—one with a hefty yet tethered strength that lingers like a classic melody. That cigar is La Aroma de Cuba Mi Amor Reserva (www.ashtoncigar.com, $8.50 to $9.95), a dramatically revved-up version of Ashton’s standard La Aroma de Cuba Mi Amor. Both are made in Pepin Garcia’s My Father Cigars factory in Estelí, Nicaragua, but the Reserva is a heavier, richer blend with additional spice derived from its Oscuro Mexican wrapper, which is taken from the highest primings of the plant. Combined with a Nicaraguan binder and filler, these tobaccos then undergo extensive fermentation, which intensifies their flavors. Four sizes are produced, but the 5½ × 54 maximo remains our favorite for crowning an elegant evening.
