Best of the Best 2013: Domestic Red Wines: PlumpJack Winery 2010 Syrah Napa Valley
In 1995, the politician Gavin Newsom and the entrepreneur Gordon Getty partnered to establish PlumpJack Winery on 42 acres of prime vineyard land in the Napa Valley’s Oakville region that had previously belonged to Villa Mt. Eden Winery. Named for Shakespeare’s comic character Sir John Falstaff, the new winery was an early advocate of the screw-cap closure for premium wines, such as its Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve and Chardonnay. Our favorite of its recent releases is the PlumpJack Winery 2010 Syrah Napa Valley (www.plumpjackwinery.com, $48), which is as effusive and lively as Plump Jack himself, showing notes of rich raspberry preserves, spiced plum, smoked bacon, pepper, licorice, and coconut cream.
