Best of the Best 2013: International Red Wines: Antinori 2009 Solaia Toscana

The firm of Marchesi Antinori has long been a pioneer in the Italian wine industry. Marchese Piero Antinori created the first commercially available Super Tuscan, Tignanello, in 1971, and its sister wine Solaia, made with fruit from a specific site on the same estate, was inaugurated with the 1978 vintage. Composed of approximately three quarters Cabernet Sauvignon and one quarter Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc, Antinori 2009 Solaia Toscana (www.antinori.it, $325) immerses its fine yet muscular tannins beneath a supple surface of cherry, chocolate, coffee, and spearmint flavors.
