Best of the Best 2013: Resorts: Singita Mara River Tented Camp

<< Back to Robb Report, 25th Annual Best of the Best

When compared with Singita’s over-the-top lodges in South Africa and in Tanzania’s Grumeti Reserves, the safari company’s new Singita Mara River Tented Camp (+27.21.683.3424, www.singita.com) seems downright reserved. The low-key luxury lodge opened in November in the northernmost corner of Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park, along a bend above the Mara River. Guests of its six tents—each located in a remote setting that ensures visitors encounter more wild animals than they do other safari-goers—explore the surrounding 98,000-acre reserve in search of lions, crocodiles, wildebeests, elephants, and more. The Cape Town design firm Cécile & Boyd’s created a perfectly rustic base for the adventures, with bohemian-chic interiors that incorporate jacaranda-wood floors and vintage travel chests. The lodge’s river-view deck offers a swimming pool that uses a solar-powered pump—proof that conservation and comfort are not mutually exclusive. ($950–$1,275, all-inclusive)
