Best of the Best 2013: SUVs: Porsche Cayenne GTS

Robert Ross

The resounding success of Porsche’s SUV series can be attributed to its deft blending of performance and practicality. The $83,000 Porsche Cayenne GTS (www.porsche.com) is the perfect complement to a 911; it allows performance-oriented drivers to scratch their itch even when picking up groceries or a pair of studio monitors. The 2013 GTS is equipped with a powerful non-turbo V-8 engine. It delivers 420 hp and 384 ft lbs of torque and propels the big SUV from zero to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds. The 8-speed Tiptronic S transmission and full-time all-wheel drive make the GTS an ideal all-weather highway cruiser. The air suspension with self-leveling ride height, the electronic damping-control system, the optional Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (which varies the distribution of torque), and the optional active anti-roll system enhance handling. Indeed, the GTS is a hoot to drive primarily because it handles so well.
