BEST of the BEST 2014 | Leisure | Cigars: Fonseca Cubano Exclusivo

  • Richard Carleton Hacker

A departure from the brand’s usually mild-mannered cigars, the Fonseca Cubano Exclusivo (www.quesadacigars.com, $6.95 to $8.95) is only the second box-pressed cigar that the Fonseca factory has produced in its 40-year history. The new blend is enhanced by a Havana Vuelta Arriba wrapper that was grown in the Dominican Republic but planted with first-generation seeds imported from Cuba. The wrapper is paired with a Dominican filler that boasts a subtle spiciness created by touches of Connecticut broadleaf and Nicaraguan tobaccos. As company president Manuel Quesada notes, the combination gives the cigar “more flavor and a little more presence in the palate.” The cigar is available in four sizes, including a 6 × 52 belicoso.
