BEST of the BEST 2014 | Style |Men’s Watches | Visual Artistry: Greubel Forsey Art Piece 1

James D. Malcolmson

To boggle the imaginations of Switzerland’s leading complicated watchmakers with the manipulation of small objects requires formidable skill. Yet the British artist Willard Wigan has done exactly this through his limited collaboration with the boutique complication specialist Greubel Forsey. The first example of Art Piece 1 (price upon request) incorporated one of Wigan’s minuscule sculptures—a detailed sailing ship with near-microscopic rigging. It is visible courtesy of a microscope, with 23 times magnification, that the watchmakers engineered to fit into the side of the case beside the inclined double tourbillon. Further Art Piece editions will be made on a semicustom basis, with input from collectors driving the subject matter of the microscopic sculptures. Though other watchmakers are including various art forms in their models, Greubel Forsey’s Art Piece 1 is an incomparable achievement not just of scale but of creative synergy.
