While the standard 1190 Adventure model is designed primarily for road riding, the R variant is suited to off-road adventuring. It has a shorter windscreen, a fixed seat, and a manually adjustable suspension that has longer travel. The 1190 Adventure R also has a 21-inch front wheel and an 18-inch rear wheel, which enhance traction and maneuverability on loose surfaces, and when the bike is traveling on dirt, its electronics complement its structural advantages.
The $16,800 bike’s 1,195 cc engine produces 150 hp in the street-ride mode, but only 100 hp in the off-road mode. Each ride mode also has preset traction-control settings, and in the off-road mode, the rear tire is allowed to spin twice as fast as the front tire. The electronics also calculate the bike’s lean angle and adjust the traction and braking accordingly. The antilock brake system is calibrated for a wide range of road conditions, including loose gravel. (KTM, www.ktm.com)
