BEST of the BEST 2014 | Wheels | Specialty Vehicles | Hot Rod : Icon Thriftmaster

  • Robert Ross

B uilt from 1947 through 1953, the Chevrolet Advance Design series trucks included the Thriftmaster pickup, a once-common sight on roads across the United States. Icon—a Southern California company that builds vintage-inspired, made-to-order vehicles—uses an original Thriftmaster as the basis for a wickedly fast and well-appointed hot-rod truck. The Icon Thriftmaster is built on a custom chassis that features coil-over suspension, an optional hydraulic lifting-and-lowering system, massive brakes, and plenty of brilliantly machined billet aluminum. The truck is powered by a General Motors 5.3-liter V-8 that delivers 315 hp; an optional Magnuson supercharger increases the output to 440 hp. The engine is paired with either a 6-speed Tremec manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic. The cabin is equipped with modern controls, a state-of-the-art audio system, sound insulation, and vintage-style split bench seats. Icon plans to build only five Thriftmaster examples, each of which will have a starting price of $245,000. (Icon, 818.280.3333, www.icon4x4.com)
