The rocks that are the centerpieces of the rings, cuff links, pendants, and bracelets in a new collection from the David Yurman brand (212.752.4255, www.davidyurman.com) came to Earth, not from it. The jewelry designer Evan Yurman, working with his father, David, has fashioned the jewelry around bits of a meteorite that thousands of years ago broke apart and landed over Gibeon, Namibia. “When you slice the Gibeon meteorite and apply an acid bath, it reveals an extraterrestrial crystal structure with flashes of light,” says Evan, who began acquiring specimens from a French dealer last year. Each of the 25 designs in the Meteorite Collection ($600 to $7,000) displays a piece of meteorite set in sterling silver, sometimes with 18-karat-gold and black-diamond accents. The effect is at once futuristic and primitive—and powerful. “The meteorite makes you dream and wonder,” Evan says. “It’s the only intergalactic material you can actually wear.”
