FrontRunners: New Heights

  • Larry Bean

A bicycle company that has catered mainly to urban commuters now offers a model for riders whose journeys take them out of the city and off the road. The Budnitz No. 2M Mountain (www.budnitzbicycles.com) is the first mountain bike from the Burlington, Vt.–based company. The No. 2M features Budnitz’s signature greaseless carbon belt drive (instead of a chain) and shock-absorbing cantilever frame, which in this case eliminates the need for (and the weight of) shock absorbers. With a titanium frame, the bike weighs just 18 pounds and has a starting price of $4,800.
