Occasionally, I find myself in a cellar of great wines without the proper tools for tackling certain decanting challenges that arise when opening a prized bottle. If the cork breaks in a special, old bottle and falls apart, you have little recourse without a filter of some sort. The WMF funnel ($23) contains a fine-metal filter insert that can simply be placed over the decanter, enabling you to remove any small pieces of cork without compromising the wine. Every wine collector needs one. A small square of cheesecloth can also be added for wines that need fine filtering. (wmf.com; available through amazon.com)
