By the time Manhattan’s famed Plaza New York hotel reopened in 2008 after three years of renovations, all but one of its residences had sold. Owners lined up for access to the five-star hotel’s services and its prime location at 1 Central Park South.

Nineteen penthouses, all with coveted Central Park views, went for over $50 million, but the largest sum was for Penthouse 2009—a 6,319-square-foot, four-bedroom home on the desired corner of Fifth Avenue and Central Park South. Russian buyer Andrei Vavilov paid $53.5 million for the property, sight unseen. However, when he finally did step foot in the unit, he did not like the feel of the sloped interiors. He called the space “a low-ceilinged attic” and tried suing the Plaza for false advertising. (The French Renaissance chateau-style building wears a “green crown” that slopes inward.) He then sold the home for $25.4 million in 2012. The unit’s new owner, London developer Christian Candy of the renowned design firm Candy & Candy, has given the home a proper makeover.

A Crestron home automation system operates climate, audio, lighting, and window treatment controls by iPad from anywhere in the three-story residence. Three en suite bedrooms with Central Park views occupy the first floor. On the second floor, an eat-in kitchen with walk-in wine cellar opens onto an informal dining and media room, and the large formal living room overlooks the park. The third-floor master suite, complete with his and her bathrooms, connects to a huge terrace on the park. The unit, perhaps Manhattan’s most prestigious “attic,” is currently listed for $59 million.
