A $22 Million Architectural (and Musical) Masterpiece in Toronto [SLIDESHOW]

JUNE 03, 2015

The late mathematician and musician Jim Stewart had two unusual requests for his final home. “I want curves and I want a performance space,” Stewart said in a 2014 interview. He spent three years (1999 to 2003) selecting the home’s architects—eventually settling on the Toronto-based, husband-and-wife team Shim-Sutcliffe Architects—and six more years (2003 to 2009) to build it. The Integral House has hosted dozens of world-class musicians, including Philip Glass and Steve Reich. “I never would have met these artists were it not for the Integral House,” Stewart said in an acceptance speech for the 2012 Governor General’s Medal in Architecture. “Building this house has transformed my life.”

Stewart passed away in December 2014 and had designated in his will that most of the proceeds from the sale of his $22 million home be given to his favorite arts, education, medical, and social programs.
