OCTOBER 24, 2014

Surfside, Florida

The Surf Club opened in 1930 as a rarefied but unstuffy social hub for its elite members in jazz-age Miami, and over the decades it hosted such A-list guests as the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and Winston Churchill, who painted beach scenes from a cabana deck there. In early 2016, the Mediterranean Revival–style structure will reincarnate after a significant renovation and be joined by new neighbors: two 12-story residence buildings and a boutique hotel, all under the Four Seasons umbrella and designed by the architect Richard Meier in conjunction with the Miami firm Kobi Karp. Interior designer Lee Mindel, of Shelton, Mindel & Associates, will collaborate with Meier on 150 residences—including 13 penthouse suites—that will feature floor-to-ceiling sliding glass panels (some leading to terraces), Boffi custom kitchens, and a choice of stone or wood flooring. Owners likely will enjoy amenities at the hotel, such as a restaurant, spa, and wellness center, and the offerings at the Surf Club, among them four pools, private gardens, and cabanas based on the establishment’s originals.
