Smart Showings January 2014

Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland
The Scottish Riviera, as the country’s southwest coast is sometimes called, is touched by the Gulf Stream and has a microclimate that is Scotland’s mildest. Besides its dramatic coastline and white-sand beaches, the area is known for its sailing. Atop a cliff overlooking this scene is a cutting-edge property suitably named the Edge.

The house, which was completed in 2012, has won four design awards for its architecture and for its energy-efficient technology. Oak, stone, and stainless steel predominate in the open interiors, and the extensive use of glass—including on the master bedroom’s deck balustrade—lets in all the available light. For practicality, the utility area off the kitchen serves as a wine chiller, a plant room, and a dog shower for canines in residence.

The surrounding landscaping is designed for high impact with low maintenance, and a treetop-level boardwalk leads to an outdoor entertainment deck, which has the requisite plumbing and wiring for a hot tub. Nearby are quaint seaside villages and 18-hole golf courses that round out the resort-like picture.
