Best of the Best 2012: Art & Collectibles: Prints and Drawings: C.G. Boerner

<< Back to Robb Report, 24th Annual Best of the Best

Few art galleries can claim a continuous history under the same name for nearly two centuries. Yet C.G. Boerner has been purveying prints and drawings by the Old Masters since 1826. Founded in Leipzig, Germany, the gallery’s early customers included Goethe and European royalty. Today it sells to the world’s top museums and institutions, and a coterie of connoisseurs of the ever-dwindling supply of top-drawer works on paper.

The gallery—whose New York and Düsseldorf locations are directed by the affable Armin Kunz—features exhibitions of 15th- through 19th-century prints and drawings, as well as select contemporary pieces. With a stock list that reads like a who’s who of art history, Kunz has placed renowned impressions—such as Rembrandt’s Three Crosses—into major collections. His New York exhibition of prints includes masterpieces by Beccafumi and Ghisi, along with an incomparable impression of Albrecht Dürer’s St. Eustace, at $650,000.
