As a prelude to the opening of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Sotheby’s will host Return of the Nigo, an auction comprising much of Japanese entrepreneur Nigo’s personal collection of Star Wars memorabilia on December 11. Among the galactic goodies up for bids are over 600 action figures and numerous signed accessories. Expected to fetch stratospheric sums is an action figure of General Madine from Return of the Jedi ($10,000 to $15,000) and one of Luke Skywalker—with a double-telescoping lightsaber—from the original movie ($12,000 to $18,000). Demanding the most ducats, however, will most likely be two complete, 62-piece Power of the Force coin sets from Kenner that were issued in 1985 ($25,000 to $35,000).
A force in both fashion and the music industry with his A Bathing Ape (BAPE) clothing line and collaborations with Kanye West and Pharrell Williams, the DJ and designer has been amassing a collection from the cinematic series since the early 1990s. An avid fan, Nigo also created his own Boba Fett and Stormtrooper miniatures in collaboration with Mediacom Toy. The live auction begins at 10 am EST with bidding accepted online. The film franchise’s next installment opens in theaters on December 18. (sothebys.com)
