FrontRunners: Bending The Rules

<< Back to Robb Report, Exotic America: 5 New World Adventures

Attend the art furnishings show (May 18 and 19 at the Pasadena Center Exhibition Hall in Pasadena, Calif.) and you might feel as though you have stepped into some sort of furniture fantasyland. Here you can find a mahogany and steel console with mirror that looks like a prop from The Lord of the Rings and a slender-legged wooden end table with a top that resembles the floating folds of a figure skater’s skirt as she spins on the ice. Elsewhere on the exhibit floor, you could see wavy wooden stereo cabinets that look as if they were caught in mid-sway, and a curious curio cabinet that appears poised to run away at any minute. “Everybody is used to buying antiques, things from the past. These are the antiques of the future,” says show co-organizer Joanne MacDonald.

The Art Furnishings Show (805.778.1584) has spawned a second show, which will debut in October in Seattle.
