When selecting items for their exhibit on rococo design, curator Gail Davidson and her colleagues employed the SOS method: “Our choices,” she says, “had to be sinuous, organic, and sensuous.” More than 300 pieces of furniture, porcelain, silverware, jewelry, and decorative art appear in Rococo: The Continuing Curve, 1730–2008, on display at Manhattan’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum ( through July 6. The exhibit covers both the original rococo movement and several rococo revivals—times, Davidson says, when designers felt the need to subvert “the tyranny of the right angle.”
