FrontRunners: Blown Away

<< Back to Robb Report, Luxury’s 25 Most Innovative Brands

The futuristic-looking Hermès Atmos (www.hermes.com.com) sports a blown-glass exterior that is nearly as complex and innovative as the clock’s Jaeger-LeCoultre movement, which uses changes in temperature to wind itself and power the clock. To make the orb, the glassblowers at the Hermès-owned Cristallerie de Saint-Louis use the so-called double-overlay technique, a delicate process that involves coating layers of glass (one of which is colored white in the clock shown) over each other and then cutting away the top two layers to create a honeycomb effect. Production of the Atmos is limited to 176 pieces, each priced at $37,000.
