Sojourn’s Alaskan routes can be customized to suit the interests of passengers, but typically the 130-foot charter embarks from the state’s capital city and cruises by the colossal Sawyer Glacier, which frequently—and dramatically—sheds slabs of blue ice into the fjord. The yacht might then head south through Fords Terror, another curving fjord lined with stunning granite cliffs, to anchor in Frederick Sound, home during the summer months to hundreds of humpback whales as well as orcas, sea lions, bald eagles, puffins, and marbled murrelets. After 10 days spent observing wildlife, exploring coves and rain forests, and touring historic port towns such as Petersburg, Sojourn’s charterers could conclude their trip 300 miles south of Juneau in the town of Ketchikan.
The four-cabin yacht, built by the California-based Gambol Industries and available for charter through Ultra Marine of New York City, sleeps eight and features silk-lined walls, marble floors, and a gourmet kitchen with a Sub-Zero refrigerator, a five-burner glass-top stove, and a Miele dishwasher. In the master stateroom, the views are courtesy of wraparound windows, and the en suite bathroom has dual vanities and a steam shower with custom etched-glass doors. Guests can soak in the region’s natural beauty from a number of alfresco vantage points, including two on-deck Jacuzzis and four dining areas, or make use of the yacht’s multilevel sport deck and its stock of WaveRunners, water skis, and inflatable kayaks.
