Swann Auction Galleries to Host World’s Largest Tennis-Themed Poster Auction

JULY 30, 2014

Swann Auction Galleries’ August 6 sale of vintage posters will offer the largest group of tennis-themed posters ever to come to auction. More than 80 different examples, spanning the late 19th century to the early 21st, reveal how the sport has changed over time and how it has symbolized the glamorous life. Highlights include poster-design superstar Roger Broders’s circa-1930 Monte-Carlo, which Nicholas D. Lowry—Swann’s president and the director of its vintage-poster department—deems “arguably one of the most popular and best tennis images of all time,” to a never-before-seen charming midcentury image by an anonymous artist touting National Tennis Week. What follows are posters that are expected to be among the auction’s top lots. (www.swanngalleries.com)
