A Star is Born

Even without its Hollywood connections, the Brando (www.thebrando.com) would be generating plenty of buzz. Set within French Polynesia’s Tetiaroa atoll—which the actor Marlon Brando purchased in 1967 after filming Mutiny on the Bounty in the area—the private-island retreat opened in July as the region’s most luxurious new resort, with 35 thatched villas scattered throughout 190 acres of unspoiled beaches and coconut palms. The property, which is located some 30 miles north of Tahiti, fulfills Brando’s vision for a sustainable escape blending barefoot luxury (private plunge pools and a restaurant from the Michelin-starred chef Guy Martin) with local culture (a spa focusing on ancient Polynesian therapies). Excursions at the resort range from snorkeling, canoeing, and paddleboarding in the turquoise lagoon to exploring Brando’s Tetiaroa on a naturalist-led boat ride among the atoll’s 11 uninhabited islets.
