Best Of The Best 2006: Farmer Tom

<< Back to Robb Report, June 2006

From the tee of the par-5 sixth hole at the Ritz-Carlton Members Golf Club, you might find it difficult to believe that the surrounding terrain recently was a flat and featureless tomato farm. Designer Tom Fazio transformed the Bradenton, Fla., site by excavating 1.9 million cubic yards of sand and soil to construct hills, valleys, and graceful swales. At the 571-yard sixth hole, three of the course’s 16 man-made lakes—Fazio’s solution for the holes he dug—come into play. Flower beds line the hole’s elevated green, and mature oaks and flowering shrubs frame the rolling fairway.

With six sets of tees, the Members Golf Club provides a full complement of distance options, and most of the 16 water hazards can be avoided. The course is open to club members and to guests of the nearby Ritz-Carlton resort in Sarasota.
