Putting is psychological, believes Jim Chiasson, founder of Greenwood Golf (802.864.7117, www.greenwoodgolf.com) of Burlington, Vt., so why not use a club that makes you feel good? The machining-industry veteran’s company, which he launched in 2003, aims to improve a golfer’s disposition—and his or her scores—with its line of custom putters made from natural woods.
 
Each Greenwood Golf customer practices with a prototype putter before selecting the hardwoods (including cherry, curly maple, and walnut) and one of three head shapes for the club. The putters, which begin at $1,400 and require about six weeks for completion, receive finishing touches from jewelers and leather craftsmen, but the clubs’ core material contributes the most to their performance and presence. “Wood provides a better feel,” claims Chiasson, “and when you pull the putter out of the bag, you can be sure no one else will have one like it.”
