Private Preview 2005: Masters' Plan

<< Back to Robb Report, October 2004

Three of golf’s biggest names—Palmer, Nicklaus, and Player—are collaborating on a project near one of the game’s most hallowed grounds. Scheduled to open in spring 2005, Champions Retreat Golf Club will be a 27-hole private course set amid the rivers, ravines, and pine trees of Augusta, Ga., the same city in which the three men earned 13 combined Masters titles. Each of the golfer/designers is constructing a nine-hole track at Champions Retreat. The Palmer Island Nine will hug the shoreline of Germain Island in the middle of the Savannah River. The Nicklaus Bluffs Nine will present a pine-shrouded setting similar to Augusta’s, with rolling greens set atop a cliff. The Player Creek Nine will provide a bit of both terrains, with five inland holes and four holes along the Uchee Creek. The golf club, part of a 1,200-acre residential development, will be limited to approximately 400 members.
