Private Preview 2005: Norman Conquest

<< Back to Robb Report, October 2004

Many tee boxes offer spectacular vistas, but the first hole at Temenos Golf Club, the Greg Norman course at Temenos Anguilla that is scheduled to open in the summer of 2005, may become the Caribbean’s answer to the 18th at Pebble Beach. Players will direct their shots at the rugged hills of St. Maarten, which lies across a narrow strait. Drives will plummet more than 40 feet to the fairway of this 390-yard par 4, and errant approach shots will run the risk of drowning in the saltwater lagoon that guards the two-tiered green. From here the challenges and, for the careful ball-striker, the rewards, will only multiply. Water will be a factor on nearly every hole, as salt marshes and ponds, mangrove thickets, and the blue-green Caribbean will await the unwary. And the relentless trade winds will be as difficult to read as a U.S. Open green. Anguilla’s location in the heart of the Leewards should draw golfers from throughout the islands to this course, and an adjacent St. Regis resort that is scheduled to open in 2006 will cater to golfers and vacationers alike.
