Montegrappa’s New Miya Carbon Pen Combines Tradition with Innovation

Montegrappa’s Miya line of writing instruments, which was previously available in sterling-silver and celluloid versions, recently welcomed a new addition sporting a barrel crafted from carbon fiber. According to Montegrappa’s CEO, Giuseppe Aquila, the Miya Carbon represents a new direction for the company, which has been manufacturing writing instruments in Bassano del Grappa, Italy—50 miles northwest of Venice—for more than a century. Breaking from tradition, the pen maker is now applying its time-tested artisanship to more cutting-edge materials, like carbon fiber, which has typically appeared on the chassis of cars and in recent years has been applied to watches and other men’s accessories.

The Miya Carbon pen is sturdy and lightweight, with a curvy shape that makes it comfortable to hold and easy to write with. Both the ballpoint ($1,400) and the fountain-pen ($1,950) models—the latter of which has an 18-karat-gold nib—come with a celluloid cap in black, orange, or yellow, with Montegrappa’s octagonal motif in silver at the top. The nib of the fountain pen is available in eight widths that range from extra-fine to thick. Custom engraving is also available upon request. (www.montegrappa.com)
