As a young immigrant from southern Italy, Salvatore Ferragamo made his name in the United States by creating fashionable made-to-measure shoes for Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, and other stars of the film industry during the early 1920s. Nearly a century later, his small Hollywood leather-goods shop has grown into a Florence-based global luxury brand that, though still family owned, has emerged as an international style leader under the guidance of its men’s creative director, Massimiliano Giornetti. Three years into his role, Giornetti is credited with developing a distinct look for the brand’s menswear and accessories by constructing comfortable, wearable designs from exceptional materials. “The most important thing that Salvatore’s work has transmitted to me,” he says, “is that beauty does not exist without function, and that form and function are always in perfect harmony.”
Now one Robb Report reader and a guest are being offered the opportunity to acquire the best of both function and form during a three-day excursion into the harmonious world of Ferragamo and Giornetti. A consultation with the menswear director at Ferragamo’s Milan boutique on the Via Montenapoleone initiates the experience, which Giornetti will personally oversee, guiding the recipient through the process of choosing the ideal wardrobe from among the brand’s signature products and customizing the pieces with unique materials and details. The selection will not be easy: Ferragamo offers hundreds of luxurious leathers, exotic skins, and fine textiles at the boutique, and its master artisans can incorporate any number of personalized details into leather goods and menswear. Further inspiration will come from attending the January 2014 Ferragamo men’s fashion show in Milan, where the recipient and his guest will preview Giornetti’s fall/winter 2014 collection.
Once the final choices have been made, the wardrobe will be assembled feet first. The recipient will be fitted for a pair of Ferragamo’s most specialized, labor-intensive men’s footwear: handmade Tramezza alligator shoes. For these shoes—which require three weeks and 320 manual steps to produce—the recipient will select one of eight distinct models and a favorite color from among the brand’s array of classic crocodile hides. Customized stitching and distinctive finishes will provide the final personal touch.
The clothing will come from Ferragamo’s Su Misura made-to-measure suiting program, which offers some 500 material choices, from exceptionally lightweight Super 120s wool and more hearty Super 200s wool to winter fabrics, including cashmere and vicuña. Once the fabric is selected, the recipient will consult with a tailor on the optimum silhouette and fit, and on such details as whether the buttons will be made from horn, metal, or mother-of-pearl. The suit will also be personalized with embroidered initials on the lining. The wardrobe will be completed by a custom-made topcoat, shirt, and tie.
Finally, this entire ensemble will fit handsomely into a crocodile weekend bag and rolling suitcase, both of which exemplify Salvatore Ferragamo’s dedication to beauty and utility. These practical travel items are executed in richly textured, tinted skins that come in a range of colors and can be accented with such options as interior pockets, specialty finishes, and even an interior or exterior personalized logo.
A few months after the recipient returns home from his Milanese excursion, his made-to-measure Ferragamo wardrobe will arrive at his door, enabling him to dress in top form at any function, anywhere in the world.
