Eyewear designer Alain Mikli is known for his extravagant use of color and avant-garde styling, but his newly launched MATT collection of sunglasses proves he’s also adept at working in high-tech materials and new technologies. The sunglasses use materials like cellulose acetate, a by-product of cotton that has been embedded with mother-of-pearl to create an almost three-dimensional effect. Inside the multihued frames the temples are polished smooth to protect the face; however, outside they have a visible rough, or matte, surface, hence the name.
The technology used to create MATT frames is equally new and innovative. Each pair features numerous signature details, including extra-thick temple tips, an ultralight nose bridge, and flexible Chaam hinges with a self-adjusting closing block that allows them to float between the lenses and the temples without seeming to touch either. The collection also employs Mikli’s proprietary ROK technology, which prevents any component of the frames from coming loose or being altered in any way, thus preventing the need for adjustments in the future. Moreover, instead of polarization, the gradient-tinted mirror lenses are made of a high-tech mineral material that offers index-3 sun protection without altering color perceptions.
